What Is a QD Bushing?

A QD bushing, short for quick-disconnect bushing, is a split flanged bushing that mounts a sprocket, sheave, or pulley onto a shaft and comes off again in minutes. You do not pull the hub off the shaft: you remove the cap screws, thread them into the removal holes in the flange, and the bushing backs itself out of the hub.

That is why QD bushings are the practical choice wherever components are changed on a maintenance schedule, or where a drive has to come apart in the field rather than in a workshop.

Replacing a worn bushing? Send the stamped part number, and we will confirm the interchangeability before you buy.

How a QD Bushing Mounts

Exploded view of a chain sprocket assembly mounted with a QD bushing
QD bushings are compatible with sprockets, sheaves, and weld-on hubs.

QD bushing installation and removal both use the cap screws that come with the bushing: no press, no puller, and no need to pull the hub off the shaft.

  1. Slide the bushing onto the shaft and align the keyway, then position the assembly where the drive needs it.
  2. Locate the hub on the bushing so the cap screw holes line up with the threaded holes in the flange.
  3. Tighten the cap screws to the torque listed for that type. To remove, move the same screws into the removal holes, and the bushing releases the hub.

Torque values per type are in the size table above. Ask us to check your installation →

Custom QD Bushing

Send a drawing, a sample, or the shaft dimensions, and we will quote a bushing that fits the application. Custom work we handle regularly:

  • Bores in inch or metric sizes
  • Keyways to your specification
  • Cast iron and steel, other materials on request
  • Bushings for hubs already in service

Not sure which type you need?
Send your dimensions and our engineers will name the closest standard item, or quote a custom one.

Interchangeable with Dodge, Martin, and Browning QD Bushing

CTS QD bushings are 100% dimensionally interchangeable with the QD bushings supplied by Browning, Dodge, Martin, and TB Wood's. In the same type and bore size, you get the same QD bushing size, so our QD bushing replaces the branded bushing in your hub without modification and comes out again with the same cap screws.

Send a Dodge QD bushing, Martin QD bushing, or Browning QD bushing part number, and we will provide a CTS equivalent QD bushing.

Quality and Inspection

CTS manufactures and supplies QD bushings for OEM builds, MRO spares, and distributor stock. Every batch is checked for bore, keyway, and taper fit before packing, and material certificates can be supplied on request. Bushings leave the factory export-packed with rust protection for sea and air freight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does QD stand for?

QD stands for quick disconnect. The bushing is split and keyed, so it tightens onto the shaft and releases from the hub quickly using the same cap screws.

Which QD bushing types do you supply?

The common QD range, from the small JA sizes through to the heavy S sizes. Tell us the type letter and the bore and we will confirm stock.

Are CTS QD bushings 100% interchangeable with Dodge, Martin, or TB Wood's?

Yes. They are made to the same dimensional standard. Confirm with the part number from your old bushing and we will match it before you order.

How do I install or remove a QD bushing?

Slide the bushing onto the shaft with the keyway aligned, set the hub on the bushing, then tighten the cap screws in the flange to the torque listed for that type. To remove it, move the same cap screws into the threaded removal holes and the bushing backs itself out of the hub.

What is the difference between a QD bushing and a taper lock bushing?

Both are split, keyed bushings that lock a hub onto a shaft. A QD bushing has a flange and is held by cap screws that pass through the flange into the hub; a taper lock bushing has no flange and is tightened by set screws. Send the part number from the machine and we will confirm which type fits.
