CNC Internal Gear Milling

Work piece set up

Secure the workpiece, usually a cylindrical or disc-shaped component, in the CNC milling machine. Ensure it is properly aligned and firmly held in place.

Tool selection

Choose the appropriate end mill or gear milling cutter based on the desired gear profile, material, and other considerations. The cutter should have the correct number of teeth and the right diameter to match the gear specifications.

Program the CNC machine

Use appropriate CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software to generate a machining program for the CNC machine. The program will define the tool path, cutting parameters, and other instructions for machining the internal gear.

Machine set up

Install the selected tool in the spindle of the CNC milling machine. Set the cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut based on the material and tool recommendations.

Begin machining

Start the CNC machine and execute the programmed tool path. The milling cutter will gradually remove material, following the programmed path, to form the internal gear teeth. The machine will move the cutter radially and axially to achieve the desired gear profile.

Coolant and chip management

Inspect and verify:

Once the internal gear milling is complete, inspect the workpiece to ensure the gear profile matches the specifications and meets quality standards. Use measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, or specialized gear measuring equipment.
