What is the ANSI standard for roller chain?
Roller chain comes in various sizes, with the most prevalent standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) including 40, 50, 60, and 80. The first digits represent the chain's pitch in eighths of an inch, while the last digit signifies the type of chain: 0 for standard, 1 for lightweight, and 5 for bushed chain without rollers.
What is the difference between ANSI and BS chain?
The ANSI series chain is measured in eighths of an inch, but only the numerator of the fraction is provided. For instance, 4 denotes 4/8 inches, which simplifies to ½ inch chain and is stamped as 40. Conversely, the BS series chain is measured in sixteenths of an inch. Therefore, 8/16 inches simplifies to ½ inch, and the chain is stamped as 08B.
